It is no surprise to many around the world that raising food prices are on the horizon.

Social unrest instigated by rising food costs is predicted to continue all over the world.

“Food price volatility featuring high prices is likely to continue and possibly increase,” the Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Food Program and the International Fund for Agricultural Development said in the joint report.

“Demand from consumers in rapidly growing economies will increase, population continues to grow, and further growth in biofuels (displacing food crops) will place additional demands on the food system.”

The report said that poor farmers and consumers in small importer countries, particularly in Africa, would be more vulnerable to shortages as a result.

The U.N. could be influenced by special interest groups who have a financial stake in keeping the population ill.

“There are clear conflicts for the corporations that contribute to and profit from the sales of alcoholic beverages, foods with high fat, salt, and sugar contents, and tobacco products — all of which are important causes of NCDs,” they wrote.

“Failure to address these concerns will undermine the development of competent policy … and the confidence the global community and the public at large have in the UN’s and WHO’s ability to govern and advance public health.”

Cancer rates in the world are on the rise.

To the alarm of the World Cancer Research Fund, 2.8 million new cancer cases have developed due to lifestyle changes.

“As countries become more urbanised, they become more prone to the Western diseases that we are used to seeing. Not just cancers – coronary heart disease, diabetes, obesity and lung diseases.”

He said: “Many people are still unaware that risk factors such as alcohol and obesity affect cancer risk, while from television advertising to the pricing of food, our society works in a way that discourages people from adopting healthy habits.”
