Treating And Preventing Inflammation

Inflammation is at the root of so many illnesses that prevention is the key to good health.

Heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, cancer and many auto-immune diseases like arthritis would greatly benefit from preventing and treating inflammation.

According to Liponis, there are blood tests, which can detect low levels of inflammation in the body. Doctors can either look at white blood cell count—the higher the count, the more inflammation—or look at c-reactive protein, which is an even more accurate test that can find levels of inflammation so low a person can’t feel them.
To prevent inflammation, Liponis recommended a few simple steps, including regular exercise, staying at a healthy weight, and taking various supplements such as vitamin D and fish oil.

Also, adding spices like turmeric, ginger and garlic can help keep inflammation at bay.

Harvard Study Advises To Limit Red Meat Consumption

Red meat just can’t catch a break.

More evidence is in about the harmful effects of red meat.

Incidence of heart disease and cancer can be linked to consumption of red meat.

It is advised to limit consumption and that limitation should be no more than 2-3 times per week.

Using data from two long-running studies of health professionals, researchers tracked the diets of more than 121,000 middle-aged men and women for up to 28 years. Roughly 20% of the participants died during that period.
On average, each additional serving of red meat the participants ate per day was associated with a 13% higher risk of dying during the study. Processed red meat products — such as hot dogs, bacon, and salami — appeared to be even more dangerous: Each additional daily serving was associated with a 20% higher risk of dying.

The Health Risks Of Sleeping Pills Are Just As Dangerous As Cigarettes

There is a study which places the risk of death from sleeping pills at four and half times higher than non-sleeping pill users.

Higher risk of cancers were found in those who were prescribed and used sleeping pills.

Currently 1 in 10 Americans are prescribed sleeping medication and the death rate could be lowered drastically.

The sleeping pills in question are known as hypnotics. They include newer drugs such as zolpidem (the best known brand name is Ambien) as well as older drugs such as temazepam (the best known brand name is Restoril).

Hypnotic sleeping pills actually cause a person to fall asleep. This sets them apart from other sleeping aids, such as the supplement melatonin, which promote sleep through relaxation. Other sleep drugs described as hypnotics by Kripke and colleagues include eszopiclone (Lunesta), zaleplon (Sonata), triazolam (Halcion), flurazepam (Dalmane), barbiturates, and older antihistamines such as diphenhydramine.

Using a pill is not the best way to beat insomnia.

Keeping a regular sleep schedule, eating well and exercise go a long way to ensure a good night’s sleep.

Can Deodorant Cause Breast Cancer?

Women have been alerted to concerns that certain ingredients in under arm deodorant may be a cause of breast cancer.

The new study does not prove that personal care products cause breast cancer. But “the fact that parabens were present in so many of the breast tissue samples does justify further investigation,” said Philippa Darbre, PhD, of University of Reading in the U.K., in a news release.

“Although the environmental exposure to parabens as a cause of breast cancer is a possibility, there is no conclusive data thus far to state this as fact,” says Katherine B. Lee, MD, in an email. She is a breast specialist at the Cleveland Clinic Breast Center in Ohio. “The study suggests that if there is a relationship between parabens and breast cancer, it may be a complex one.”

While there is no direct link between deodorant and breast cancer, eliminating toxic exposure would benefit your health.
