Dental X-Rays Linked To Certain Brain Tumors

There is concern over exposure to dental x-rays and the threat that they may pose.

Meningioma and thyroid cancer have been connected to dental x-rays, however, there is no causal relationship established and dental professionals are calling for more research.

“It’s a cautionary tale … we do know that radiation can cause tumors, and we have to be judicious with its use,” said Dr. Donald O’Rourke, an associate professor of neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania who was not involved in the study.

Meningiomas are the most frequently occurring tumor in the head. They are located in the meninges, the tissues covering the brain. The vast majority are “benign” – or noncancerous – but, depending on their location, could cause blindness or other serious neurological damage. Those in the skull base are more difficult to remove in their entirety. Depending on the tumor, surgery may not be required.

There is always caution against excessive radiation exposure from x-rays.

Despite Assurances on Milk Safety , Radiation Fear Continues

The alarm was sounded on Wednesday, when federal officials announced that tests had detected a trace amount of iodine 131 in milk.

Although we may never know the extent of radiation exposure to the food supply; the alarm hasn’t gone off.

Be reasonably cautious about food purchases.

“I’ve had members call to ask whether we’ve seen the media, and media calling to ask how this is impacting our members,” said Michael Marsh, the chief executive of Western United Dairymen, the milk industry’s West Coast trade association. Mr. Marsh said he had repeated the assurances given by officials, but he also understood the fears in the supermarket’s refrigerated aisle.

Should we fear radiation exposure at the dentist office?

It’s age old question that we’ve all considered at on time or another.

We are exposed to radiation daily through cell phone use, television and small appliances but is the radiation exposure at the dentist of particular concern?

Although thyroid cancer is one of the most survivable of cancers it is also believed that a rise in the incidence of certain cancers can be attributed to medical radiation exposure.

The jury is still out, however, and further studies need to be done to alleviate fears.
