Add Elderberry To Your Diet

It’s no wonder that this little berry is becoming more popular.

Elderberries are used for its antioxidant activity, to lower cholesterol, improve vision, boost the immune system, improve heart health and for coughs, colds, flu, bacterial and viral infections and tonsilitis.

Elderberries contain organic pigments, tannin, amino acids, carotenoids, flavonoids, sugar, rutin, viburnic acid, vitaman A and B and a large amount of vitamin C.

They are also mildly laxative, a diuretic, and diaphoretic.

Flavonoids, including quercetin, are believed to account for the therapeutic actions of the elderberry flowers and berries.

According to test tube studies2 these flavonoids include anthocyanins that are powerful antioxidants and protect cells against damage.

In the study, various bio-markers of stress, including glucose, magnesium and other plasma chemical levels, were analyzed. “What we found was that elderberry has this extraordinary effect for reducing stress,” notes Porta. It is for this reason that researchers from the US Air Force sit with us. Elderberry may hold promise for stress reduction among military personnel.

Oncologists Call For An End To Tanning Beds

Skin cancers constitute nearly half of all new cancers in the United States, with more than 3.5 million new cases annually.

In the past 3 decades, melanoma-related mortality has risen in the United States by 690%.

The scientific case against tanning beds is strong. Of note, a recent study linked tanning-bed use during adolescence and early adulthood with a 2-fold increased risk for melanoma (Int J Cancer. 2011;128:2425-2435). A study of nearly 1200 melanoma patients presented at the 2012 American Academy of Dermatology annual meeting provided even more convincing evidence linking indoor tanning with invasive cutaneous melanoma, as reported by Medscape Medical News.

Nearly 26 bills intended to limit tanning bed use in the U.S have been vehemently challenged by the tanning bed industry. Nearly all were defeated.

Public safety, once again, takes a back seat to special interest.

Bottled Water May Be The Culprit In Early Childhood Tooth Decay

If you think that bottled water is better than tap, then think again.

Dentists are seeing record numbers of tooth decay in very young children, some as young as eighteen months old.

Not only are children drinking more sugary juices and less water but the water that they are drinking is not fluoridated.

“You should brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, see the dentist twice a year for fluoride treatment and get fluoride in your drinking water,” said Jonathan D. Shenkin, spokesman on pediatric dentistry for the American Dental Association. “If you’re not getting it in your drinking water, that takes out a component of the effectiveness of that triad.”

Another concern to consider is the level of BPA in plastic bottles.

This highly toxic chemical leaches into the water and can further damage you and your child’s health.

Don’t Let Bad Eating Habits Ruin Your Diet

So much of what we do is habit.

Our lives run on “auto pilot” and once we get in a groove it is often difficult to break out.

A few small changes to your eating routine can create some big changes on the scale if you are ready and willing to evaluate your bad habits and replace them with some new ones.

Snacking, mindless eating, weekend binges and emotional eating top the list as the biggest offenders to otherwise healthy eating.

Replacing empty calories with nuts, fruits and veggies can help snack time became a way to satisfy your hunger and provide yourself with nutritious vitamins and minerals.

Being conscious of your actions is the most important change to make.

Starving yourself all week only to binge on junk all weekend is not an effective way to lose or maintain your weight.

Try being more moderate and reigning in weekend behavior and give yourself a break during the week when you are less likely to go out of control.

Become aware of your actions and consciously choose.

After a while, the healthy choice will become your new habit

An Aspirin A Day To Keep The Cancer Away

Aspirin therapy may be effective in preventing and even treating some cancers.

This is very promising news considering the high cost of medical care and the relatively inexpensive and highly accessible nature of aspirin.

There are drawbacks to using aspirin such as gastrointestinal bleeding, however these usally mild symptoms seemed to dissipate over time.

More studies need to be done, however the news is promising.

A new study finds that people who took a low-dose aspirin daily for at least three years were 25 percent less likely to develop cancer than people who didn’t take it.

Aspirin also reduced the risk of death from cancer by nearly 40 percent after five years, the researchers said.

The reduced risk of death may be due in part to a decrease in cancer’s ability to spread to other organs. In a second study, researchers found a daily dose of aspirin led to a 36 percent reduction in the risk of being diagnosed with cancer that spread to other organs.
