Teenagers Using Hand Sanitizer To Get High

The latest foray into “stinkin’ thinkin’ ” by America’s teenagers has led to drinking hand sanitizer to get high.

The problem is that drinking hand sanitizer will make you ill and land you in the E.R.

A spike in the number of teenagers who became ill after drinking hand sanitizer in Los Angeles County — 16 cases in March and April, according to the California Poison Control System. Now there’s a flurry of reports from other parts of the country, too.

Hand sanitizer kills germs because it’s made with ethyl alcohol. That’s the same stuff that gives a glass of wine its pleasant buzz. I’ve never imbibed hand sanitizer, but my guess is that it lacks the complex bouquet of a good cabernet. Indeed, I’d guess that it tastes nasty.

Raising a Rebellious Teen May Be A Good Thing

Who would have thought that arguing with your teen was a good idea?

As emotionally exhausting as it can be it is also the training ground of real life.

Yo don’t want your kid to be a push over and learning to communicate and negotiate effectively are valuable skills in all aspects of life.

Allen says almost all parents and teenagers argue. But it’s the quality of the arguments that makes all the difference.

“We tell parents to think of those arguments not as nuisance but as a critical training ground,” he says. Such arguments, he says, are actually mini life lessons in how to disagree — a necessary skill later on in life with partners, friends and colleagues on the job.

Teens should be rewarded when arguing calmly and persuasively and not when they indulge in yelling, whining, threats or insults, he says.

HPV Vaccine Becomes the Center Of Republican Debate

HPV is extremely common—75 percent of all women will eventually come in contact with this virus. But the good news is that most of those cases will clear up by themselves in as little as two years. Plus, there’s the additional protection of vaccination.

Nearly 100 percent of cervical cancers are caused by high-risk HPV, says Mark Einstein, M.D., director of clinical research at Montefiore Medical Center and Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. If left untreated, cervical cancer may require chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a full hysterectomy, and may even result in infertility or death.

The vaccine Gardasil protects against four of the most common strains of HPV, 16 and 18 (which can cause cervical cancer) and 6 and 11 (which cause genital warts).

Another vaccine, Cervarix, has also been approved by the FDA and is highly effective in treating strains 16 and 18. The National Cancer Institute reports that there is evidence that Cervarix may also protect against other types of HPV that cause cancer.

The HPV Vaccine can be beneficial, however, a government mandate may not be popular.

Teen pregnancy is a major cause of young women dropping out of school.

Studies have shown a strong correlation between completion of high school and decreased long-term welfare dependence.

Studies have also shown that pregnant teens are at a high risk of medical complications.

They have twice the normal risk of delivering low birth weight infants with mental, physical and developmental problems.

Music may be inspiring, but too much of it may be depressing

Would you rather be reading a book or listening to music?

Study shows that the number of people in the U.S reading books is decreasing, while the number of nearly all other forms of media users is increasing.

The study led by Dr. Brian Primack, an assistant professor of medicine and pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, comes to the conclusion that by listening to a lot of music there is an 80% higher risk of having major depression than people who read books or watch TV.

“At this point, it is not clear whether depressed people begin to listen to more music to escape, or whether listening to large amounts of music can lead to depression, or both,”
