Non-Dairy Sources of Calcium

If you’re watching your weight, cholesterol levels or simply want to improve your overall health you may want to consider alternative sources of calcium.

Dairy allergies which may prevent you from getting all the calcium your body needs so consider some of these alternatives which you can easily incorporate into your diet deliciously.

Bok choy: This Chinese leafy green vegetable would appear to be most similar to lettuce: it’s tender, light, watery, crisp and would seem to be low in nutrition density. But just 1 cup of cooked boy choy equals the same amount of calcium as an 8-ounce glass of milk.

Kale: The beloved “superfood” green vegetable boasts calcium as just one of many minerals found inside its chewy, dense leaves. In 1 ½ cups of cooked kale, you’ll get the same amount of calcium as an 8-ounce glass of milk.
Turnip greens: Turnips can be used with squash, potatoes and root veggies in winter dishes; don’t throw out their greens! Turnip greens are rich in bioavailable calcium; just 1 cup of cooked greens gives you the calcium of an 8-ounce glass of milk.

Sea vegetables: Sea vegetables seem to do only good for the body. They flush out toxins and heavy metals from our system and supply ample amounts of trace minerals. Pile your lunch bowl with a large heaping of alaria (or wakame) and kelp for a calcium boost; 4 cups of the seaweed equals the calcium of an 8-ounce glass of milk.

Tofu: Tofu isn’t as hot as it used to be with health nuts in the ‘90s, but it does still deserve credit when due. With most tofu varieties, just a ½-cup serving has the same amount of calcium as an 8-ounce glass of milk.
Dried figs: Believe it or not, these dried fruits are an excellent source of dietary calcium. Ten fruits supplies the same amount as an 8-ounce glass of milk.

Sustainable bony fish: You don’t have to be strictly vegan to do dairy-free. If you ever eat fish, check out Alaskan salmon, sardines and mackerel (all sustainable choices) for a serious calcium boost. A 3-ounce serving contains the same amount of calcium as an 8-ounce glass of milk.

Komen Foundation Feeling The Backlash From Withdrawing Planned Parenthood Funding

As the Susan B. Komen Foundation pulls $700,000 of donations from Planned Parenthood there is backlash from around the country.

Mayor Bloomberg of New York has donated $250,000 of his own money to the organization.

Komen for the Cure founder Nancy Brinker stands by the Planned Parenthood decision.

The reason the group has given is that newly adopted rules prevented Komen grants to groups under investigation by law enforcement.

Planned Parenthood is being investigated by Republican Florida Rep. Cliff Stearns in Congress.

“We will never bow to political pressure. We will always stand firm in our goal to end breast cancer forever. We will never turn our backs on the women who need us the most,” she said in the video. “The scurrilous accusations being hurled at this organization are profoundly hurtful to so many of us who have put our heart and soul and lives into this organization.”

Big Love For Big People

Having sex when your’re overweight can be a challenge.

While self-esteem may play a role, it’s not the only factor involved. Conditions such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes often accompany obesity and can impair blood flow to the genitals, resulting in problems with erectile dysfunction in men and arousal in both men and women. Extra weight can also stress the knees and other joints, making some sexual positions uncomfortable.

Regardless of your size your health should be your main concern.

Enjoying an active sex life is a part of a healthy lifestyle and can offer many benefits to your physical and emotional well being.

Can Eating With Friends Make You Fat?

People who eat together tend to mimic their dining partner.

Whether it is competitive eating or empathetic dining it really does happen; subconsciously.

Researchers say the findings help explain previous studies showing that people tend to adjust their food intake — up or down — to match that of their eating companions, and tend to eat more with others than when dining alone.
“This demonstrates the power of social influence over food intake,” says lead author Roel Hermans, a doctoral candidate in developmental psychopathology at Radboud University Nijmegen, in the Netherlands.

Chicken Soup Is The Cure For What Ails You

It looks like mom had it right all along.

Chicken soup is the cure for what ails you.

And the homemade variety does the job best.

There is no real science behind why it works but it is hard to argue with the results.

The 12th century philosopher and physician Maimonides touted the benefits of chicken soup. More contemporary scientists have found mere hints of therapeutic effect, and broth alone has only modest nutritional benefits. When it comes to soup, it’s clearly a case of experience trumping what little science there is.
