BMI Isn’t the Best Measure of Fitness

Being in shape is more important than shedding pounds for most men.

Measuring BMI only can provide a false assessment of your overall health.

Consult your doctor to make sure that your weight is not causing adverse affects to your cholesterol levels, blood pressure or any other vital measurements of your fitness level.

“In the study group, fitness may be more important than BMI,” says Gillinov, who is also a coauthor of the book Heart 411. “But it is dangerous to generalize.”
Some experts have questioned whether BMI provides an accurate picture of health, since people who are very muscular can have a high BMI without having excess fat. As Gillinov puts it, “LeBron James has a high BMI.”

The HCG Weight loss Miracle is Illegal says the FDA

Over the counter HCG weight loss products have caused a sensation yet have not been proven either safe or effective by the FDA.

The startling and drastic weight loss experienced by users have caused high demand for the products which are selling on-line and in drug stores. The manufacturing of these products, however, are not regulated by any public health governing body.

“These HCG products marketed over-the-counter are unproven to help with weight loss and are potentially dangerous even if taken as directed,” said Ilisa Bernstein, acting director of the Office of Compliance in FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “And a very low-calorie diet should only be used under proper medical supervision.”

The FDA says people on such diets have an increased risk of heart arrhythmia’s, electrolyte imbalance and gallstones. Currently no HCG products for weight loss have been approved by the agency.

Ersatz Chicken Cause Illness

Imitation meat products cause allergic reaction and illness but not any more so than soy products, nuts, shellfish dairy or eggs.

The FDA has stepped in, however, has found no reason extend warnings against Quorn.

Quorn products, sold at popular grocery chains including Whole Foods, come in the shape of artificial “Chik’n” patties or nuggets – or even cylindrical beef approximations or turkey “roasts.” The main ingredient is a so-called mycoprotein — protein extracted from a microscopic fungus. Quorn has sparked a yum or eww debate among vegetarians since it hit the U.S. market nearly a decade ago.

It is best to keep in mind that imitation anything is usually filled with preservatives, and artificial colors and flavors therefore raising the chances of having and adverse reaction to something in the preparation

The Health Risks of Apple Juice Don’t Lie in the Arsenic

Apple juice has faced some controversy in the past few months.

A while back Dr. Oz brought up the fact that apple juice contains unacceptable levels of arsenic, however, nutritionists say that arsenic aside, it is the high levels of sugar which are most disconcerting.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says juice can be part of a healthy diet, but its policy is blunt: “Fruit juice offers no nutritional benefit for infants younger than 6 months” and no benefits over whole fruit for older kids.

Kids under 12 consume 28 percent of all juice and juice drinks, according to the academy. Nationwide, apple juice is second only to orange juice in popularity. Americans slurp 267 ounces of apple juice on average each year, according to the Food Institute’s Almanac of Juice Products and the Juice Products Association, a trade group. Lots more is consumed as an ingredient in juice drinks and various foods.

Some Tests Results are too Important to Wait For

Some test results are too important to wait for your doctor to get around to calling you.

Patients need to start taking the initiative when it comes to their healthcare.

There are a few steps every patient can take to stay on top of test results. For starters, always ask which test is being performed and when to expect the results. Stream says he’s very specific with patients: “I tell them, ‘I’m scheduling a CT scan of your abdomen, and if you don’t hear from me in three days, call me.’ ” If your doctor doesn’t spell out these details clearly on his own, nudge him along.

Patients need to be active players in their health care.

Often a patient can be out of sight and out of mind.

Staying on top of your care is the best way to insure that you’re getting the best service.
