For centuries cultures all over the world have known of the health benefits of probiotics.

Fermented foods have been apart of many cuisines and they are recognized for the curative and healthy properties.

In addition to yogurt and kefir, probiotics can be found in pickled cabbage like kimchi or sauerkraut, fermented beans like tempeh and miso, soy sauce and buttermilk. Probiotics are a benign product, meaning there is very little documentation of harm from consuming them in foods or supplements.

Antibiotic Use in Livestock Coming Under Scrutiny

The Food and Drug Administration is calling for restrictions in use of antibiotics in animals.

Crowded and filthy conditions call for the use of the drugs to prevent illness in the animals which could be passed on to humans.

However, it seems that the antibiotics are indeed being passed on to humans and helping to create super-bugs which are becoming increasingly drug resistant.

Some 80 percent of antibiotic drugs in the United States were sold for use in food animals, according to the FDA. Many of those are used to help animals grow faster and prevent infections from breaking out on big farms. Today’s announcement on cephalosporins doesn’t affect those antibiotics in feed.

Still, the more the cephalosporins are used, the greater the chances that they will stop working because bacteria can become resistant to them.

FDA Fails to Protect Consumers from Antibiotic Saturated Food Supply

A coalition of consumer groups filed a federal lawsuit Friday against the US Food and Drug Administration over the use of human antibiotics in animal feed, citing that it creates dangerous superbugs.

The suit alleges that the regulatory agency concluded in 1977 that the practice of feeding healthy animals low doses of penicillin and tetracycline could lead to the rise of antibiotic resistant bacteria in people.

“Accumulating evidence shows that antibiotics are becoming less effective, while our grocery store meat is increasingly laden with drug-resistant bacteria,” said Peter Lehner, NRDC executive director.

FDA did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment.

Last year, the FDA authorities pressed farmers to give fewer antibiotics to livestock and poultry to reduce the risk of potentially harmful resistance to antimicrobial drugs.

Yet FDA officials stressed the drugs could play a key role when used properly.

Factory farming promotes illness for animals who live in filthy and over-crowded conditions and who are fed large amounts of corn which they can not digest which allows them to grow at an unatural and alarming rate causing a host of health problems requiring antibiotic use.

To chocolate or NOT to chocolate?

The most popular flavors among kids, chocolate and strawberry, also come along with sugars including high fructose corn syrup.

The best choice for chocolate milk in our schools would be healthy organic milk form grass fed cows and natural raw sugars.

Keep our milk clean, keep away from rBGH (Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone), GMO (Genetically Modified Organism), antibiotics and high fructose corn syrup which definitely endanger everyone’s health.

Meat: Consider the Implications

From large amounts of waste to the effects of rBGH and antibiotics in our food supply it may be time to consider the real implications of consuming animal prducts!
