An Apple a Day Keeps the Cardiologist Away!

As an apple lover I was really happy to hear that eating one or two apples a day may reduce the risk of heart disease.

Like any fruits there are nutritional benefits to eating them.

However, apples in particular seem to have certain properties which allay the onset of cardio-vascular disease.

“We were pleasantly surprised …” that apples so effectively lowered LDL (bad) cholesterol, says study researcher Bahram H. Arjmandi, PhD, RD, Margaret A. Sitton Professor and Chair, Department of Nutrition, Food and Exercise Sciences at The Florida State University in Tallahassee.

“When we look at the whole composite of human studies and animal studies and in vitro lab studies, when you look at the active components in apples and apple juice, there’s definitely benefit,” says Dianne A. Hyson, PhD, RD, a nutritionist and researcher at the University of California at Davis.

Illinois to BanTrans Fats

Illinois would be the second state to enact a ban of trans fats if the senate approves the bill and Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn does indeed sign it.

California was the first state officially ban the use of trans fats and other cites and municipalities around the country have followed.

Health costs are crippling many state economies and a ban on trans fats is seen as a way to alleviate some of that burden.

The health risks of trans fats are well known and limiting their use could only improve overall health of the population.

Legislation that passed the Illinois House on Wednesday would ban artery-clogging trans fats in food served in restaurants, movie theaters, cafes and bakeries or sold in school vending machines, starting in 2013. School cafeterias would be affected in 2016. Most prepackaged food would not be covered.

To chocolate or NOT to chocolate?

Milk is good for our kids because it contains vitamin D, calcium and it’s a good source of protein.

The dilemma about the milk is when we add artificial ingredients such as food coloring, dyes, stabilizers and preservatives.

The most popular flavors among kids, chocolate and strawberry, also come along with sugars including high fructose corn syrup.

The best choice for chocolate milk in our schools would be healthy organic milk form grass fed cows and natural raw sugars.

Keep our milk clean, keep away from rBGH (Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone), GMO (Genetically Modified Organism), antibiotics and high fructose corn syrup which definitely endanger everyone’s health.

Healthy snacks now in AMC movie theaters

By bringing healthier snacks into concession stands, it would be helping our country meet an urgent public health need.

Taking this step is also great for audiences and for the businesses, because the hope is that people would want to see healthier foods in theaters.

Armed with greater nutritional information consumers have a chance to make healthier snack choices at the concession stand.

“I applaud AMC for making healthier snacks available for theatergoers at concession stands around the country,” said Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton. “I believe this will be good for business and for public health.”

Eating Fresh Foods May Cut Exposure to BPA

Eating fresh is not a luxury nowadays, it could mean your very health.

We are surrounded by BPA (Bisphenol A) at every corner of our home, car, office, stores and it’s very important to eliminate BPA as much as we can at least in OUR KITCHEN.

Considering that we wrap our food, carry our food or store our food in plastic we should be aware of its use and do so as a last resort.

In September 2010, Canada became the first country to declare BPA as a toxic substance. In the European Union and Canada, BPA use is banned in baby bottles.

“We found just by substituting fresh foods with limited packaging for three days, we reduced exposure levels in these participants by more than half,”
